Libellula quadrimaculata

Libellula quadrimaculata forma prenubila, male

Probably the most common dragonfly species in Sweden. It is present in most lakes, often in large numbers. This species is well known for it’s migrations, there are reports from France were migrating L. quadrimaculata darkened the sun for several hours. A special forma prenubila can rarely be seen. T his has much bigger node spots.

Key characteristics

Dark spots at the wing nodes. This characteristics have influenced most national names such as Fyrfläckig trollslända (Swedish), Four spotted chaser (English), Vierfleck (German) Libellule à quatre taches (France). In air: May to August
