Aeshna juncea

Aeshna juncea, male

A common species most calm waters. It is also often seen in the forest along forest roads or open places in the forest. It is found all over Sweden. In bogs one can sometimes see it together with A subarctica. It is a very rigid dragonfly with an abdomen of 50-59 mm. It is very easy to mix up with A subarctica, but is a little bit bigger. Personally I have noticed that the wings are brownish but A. subarctica has clear wings. But I have never seen this characteristic in the literature.

Key characteristics

Male: Brown with clear blue spots. Between the lines on the thorax it usually has a small spot, A. subarctica has three spots (forma elisabethae) or a third line (forma interlineata) Female: Brown with yellow spots. Thorax like the male but the lines are cutted into two.

In air
